Prescription Drugs

Detox of some prescription drugs such as Benzodiazepines, can also be fatal, if stopped suddenly.

Prescriptions drugs can be helpful for many conditions when used properly, however, often they are also misused.  Many prescription drugs have am addictive quality and the body has a unique ability to 'manufacture' more need for the drug.  Examples are listed below:

Benzodiazepines: People who have a history of drug or alcohol abuse are more likely to develop an addiction to these drugs. If you use these drugs over a long period of time you can develop a tolerance for them. This means that you will need higher doses of the drug to treat your health condition or disease because you've become tolerant of the weaker formulations of the drug. These drugs may be very effective for the treatment of several conditions, for example, anxiety and insomnia; but be careful because you can become addicted to them. Examples of Benzodiazepines are:

  • alprazolam (Xanax)

  • clobazam (Onfi)

  • clonazepam (Klonopin)

  • clorazepate (Tranxene)

  • chlordiazepoxide (Librium)

  • diazepam (Valium)

  • estazolam (Prosom)

  • lorazepam (Ativan)

Ambien: Zolpidem, sold under the brand name Ambien, among others, is a medication primarily used for the short term treatment of sleeping problems.

ADHD, ADD Medications: ADHD is a complex neurological disorder that impacts the executive functions needed to assess, plan, and execute life.  There are two major types of ADHD, ADD medications in use today.  The goal of medication is to have the brain firing at the same speed across all synapses.  The first type is the stimulant based medications.  Stimulants are used to have the brain operate at one speed.  These drugs include the following:

Methylphenidate type:

  • Ritalin

  • Concerta

  • Methylin or Metadate

Amphetamine Based:

  • Adderall

  • Dexadrine

Other stimulants in use are drugs such as:

  • Vyvanse

  • Biphentin

Non Stimulant drugs are also used. Examples are: Strattera, Clonodine and Intuniv.

*It is important to note that ADHD and ADD prescription drugs are not a gateway drug to other addictions.  Addiction has many different causes.
